David Silver
Assistant Professor, Department of Communications, University of Washington.
Dr. Silver will talk about Cyberculture and also: the september project
His research interests revolve around the intersections between computers, the Internet, and contemporary American cultures. He teaches courses in new media, cyberculture, and communication and culture. His current research explores what he calls .mil: contemporary, US-based militarization of digital technologies, economies, and cultures; the continued commercialization of military technologies, especially those digital; and the intersections and interchanges between the two.

Wanda Pratt
"New Technologies and Their Impact on Searching and Using the Medical Literature".
Dr. Pratt will talk about
3 new kinds of technology for using or searching the medical literature
all which focus on the problem of information overload. Her
research interests are in developing and evaluating new types of
information technology to help people find, share, manage, and use
textual information. She typically focuses on knowledge-based approaches
to address problems of information overload in the health-care area. She
also bases her work on the needs of real users; thus, her work also
incorporates studying people's information behavior and the impact of
new information technology on their lives.
Dr. Pratt is an Assistant Professor in both the Information School and
the Division of Biomedical & Health Informatics in the School of
Medicine at the University of Washington.

Wrapup/Evaluation
Travel Assistance: WMLA offers travel assistance of up to $200 per person to 5 librarians who are WMLA members and who live more that 200 miles from the meeting site in Kenmore, WA. The funds will help defray meeting, travel, and lodging costs. We especially want to encourage first time attendees or those members who have not been able to attend a WMLA meeting in recent years.
